My journey to find Tau Kappa Epsilon at Iowa State was uncommon, but one that I will always be thankful for. I initially started looking at fraternities because although there were a lot of things I was unsure about college, there was one thing I was sure of: I was NOT staying in the dorms. To me, dorms typically had few opportunities for mentorship and networking, no feeling of “family, and not many opportunities to be social. I knew that I would be immediately fighting an uphill battle if I lived in the dorms. I understand that’s not the case for everyone, but that was my outlook as I prepared to come to Iowa State. After I made that decision, the logical route was to look at fraternities, as those three aspects are what most fraternities are known for. I knew that I wanted to join a large chapter in order to expand my social network and get plenty of men to help me, and that I wanted a dry facility because I wanted my college experience to be focused primarily around personal development and continuing my education, rather than partying and alcohol. I had no family in fraternities, and had no idea where to start; I simply started reaching out to chapters that met my criteria. What caught my attention about TKE is how it felt like home the second I walked in the door. All of the men acted as if they had known each other their entire lives, and they were all achieving amazing things. They genuinely caring about each other, and it seemed that their brother’s success was just as important as their own. The second thing that caught my eye was along the lines of success as well, I was amazed by how intelligent all of the men were, and how each of them were making huge waves in the world. It seemed in every corner of the earth, in any industry you could imagine, someone in TKE was next in line to lead. The decision to join TKE was the easiest decision I’ve ever had to make, and it’s one that I am thankful for each day.
